The Reverend Victor Michael Singletary
On June 20th, 2000, the membership issued a call to Reverend Victor M. Singletary to become the eighteenth pastor of First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill. On October 1, 2000 Reverend Singletary assumed the full time position as pastor. He is married to Carol joy Lawrence, and they have a son, Curtis Joshua.
Reverend Singletary aspires to the calling of an organic intellectual, in which he can exercise both his eccle-siastical and academic gifts with the purpose of making the world a more just place. Educational administration is the realm in which he had pri-marily functioned. In gratitude to his grandparents and mentors, Singletary entered the field of under-graduate and graduate admissions to assist other first generation matriculates. He began at his alma mater, Dartmouth College, where he was the Stu-dent Coordinator of Minority Recruitment. At New York University, he was a Senior Admissions Counselor and Coordinator of Minority Recruit-ment. He also served as the Director of Recruitment and First Degree Admissions at Union Seminary, and in that position he tripled the percentage of African Americans pursuing seminary degrees. He contin-ued his educational career as the Deputy Director of Admissions at Teachers College.
As a clergyperson, Reverend Singletary served as the As-sistant Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn. He has contributed significantly to the Christian education offerings, teaching in the Imani Bible Institute and the Sunday School, and assisted the youth of the church and community who are applying to college with their applications. He has also chaired the Loan Com-mittee of the Sanctuary Restoration Project, and he endeavored to foster collaboration be-tween the church and community, so that all per-sons are served. Reverend Singletary has served at Tremont United Methodist Church in the Bronx, and the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Singletary taught as an Adjunct Assistant Profes-sor at Medgar Evers College of CUNY. In addition, he has taught at the Indian River Community Col-lege in Ft. Pierce. His courses included: The Growth and Development of the United States, An Introduction to African-American History, and Black Women's Literature.
Reverend Singletary preached the services at First Baptist Church Capitol Hill on Sunday, July 2, 2000, and upon his arrival he began to provide the spiritual leadership to revitalize the congregation. The theme in 2000 was ?Forgetting that which is behind us, we press on toward the future in Christ Jesus?Philippians 3:12-15. Singletary started a class?What the Bible is All About,? commenced a church-wide Bible study, and began Bible study for residents of Kelly Miller Smith Towers. Mrs. Carol Joy Singletary began offering a nursery for children 18 months to three years old to complement the Kincaid Nursery and Children’s Church. Installation services for the new pastor took place on February 18, 2001. The theme was: ?Celebrating Our Legacy As We Move Forward in Faith?Joshua 4:21-24.He said: ?The vision for now is focused in the first few years on discipleship development of the membership and that is through Christian education, and we will endeavor to become the best disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ that we can be.? The Church completed plans for expansion and renovation of the main facility. On October 27, 2001, V. M. Singletary and other leaders of the Nashville Opportunities Industrial Center held the first Kelly Miller Smith, Sr. Prayer Breakfast at the Renaissance Hotel.
-Services: 8:00 A.M. Sunday; 10:55 A.M. Sunday. Sunday school at 9:00, including classes for children, young adults, married couples and singles, and retired persons.
Prayer Meetings and Bible Study are held on Wednesday evenings. Please feel welcome also to join the Choir, including ones for children, young adults, men, and women.
